I recently bought a new VW Golf R. It was immediately evident that the stock boot struts/stays are not strong enough for the weight of the boot lid.
I replaced my stock rear wing shortly after getting the car which has obviously added even more weight to the boot.
The boot slams hard upon closing and is heavy to open. The gas struts are no where near strong enough to properly assist with opening.
My questions are:
1. How do I go about selecting the optimal strength boot strut/stay? How do I determine the OEM strut "strength"? And how would I know how much stronger to get? Obviously I don't want to get something too strong which slams the boot open and is difficult to close. (Excuse my lack of technical terminology here).
2. Any advice on what brand to get? (And where to source them?) I like to keep my cars as stock as possible and failing that, use only high quality components if nothing stock exists to do the job. Please only recommend high quality brands.
Thanks for the help!

The stock ejection rating on Mk6 & 7 rear lid struts is around 500/550 Newton iirc.... I might be wrong.
Mk8,I would assume is similar..
Get a Quality OEM replacement (Febi, Borsehung etc.)
or go to a canopy/trailer spares specialist and find one, with suitable length, diameter (to fit in cavity), ball end fittings and a slightly higher ejection rating.
(My A4's struts is Rated at 700N)
Beware: don't go to big, or you'll get an uppercut under the chin, every time you open it..
While you busy: can also look into a front gas strut conversion (Shame on you VW for an ancient manual strut on a MK8!)
1 x MK7/7.5 strut part
1 x GAS STRUT END FITTINGS 10mm
1 x 10mm Nut
2 x washers
