It's the VW club of SA and not VW club of JHB, However majority of our members are in Gauteng.

I also love the MKIV, to me thats the last shape that stil truly resembles Golf. I don't drive the R much, its one of my cars that just stays in the garage mostly and only gets driven a few km every 2 weeks to charge the battery and lubricate the engine. The GTI executive is my everyday car. You use your R everyday? I will put up a posting on the rides section in a few minutes.

Thank you, I need it, it takes double the effort and double the money. Had the following replaced on the GTI:
Turbo, cambelt, fanbelt, radiator fan, water pump, breather pipe, boost control valve, dump valve, oxygen sensors, glove compartment door, radio, 2 x front tyres, small bits here and there and gave it a thorough service including gearbox oil.

On the GTI R I replaced discs and pads on all four wheels, breather pipe, vacuum reservoir, coils and did a almost full service (didn't change bearbox oil)

Both vehicles have fully synthetic oil in their engines.

How long have you had your Golf? Is it also GTI?

Yeah, i have the 110Kw model.... Got it for over a year now, replaced the same parts as you, including the head and re-done the suspension, but is messed again... I ordered forge silicone pipes and breather hoses, waiting for them to be delivered, and just need to do my shocks, which i am getting coilovers....

Great cars, but expensive to maintain

I want to have the suspension on the R looked at, its a bit twitchy / jumpy side ways when going over a bump. I had control arm bushes replaced on the GTI by VW and it also feels twitchy / jumpy now. I havent had any problems with hoses so far, just the one 90° pipe was replace when the turbo was replaced. Great cars yes but like you say the parts prices are ridiculous, double as expensive as Land Rover and BMW :(
